Not a miracle-worker
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
My apartment has paper thin walls and my upstairs neighbor often disturbs me with all his noise. Based on the great reviews, I decided to buy this product. Sadly, I find it only helps if I simultaneously wear earplugs. I tried it by itself and I found myself waking up too much due to noise.

Can’t sleep without it
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Starting using this in college because of dorm noise. Then for neighbor noise. Now for husband snoring. Low setting available, but I use the louder setting. Even my initially doubting husband sleeps better with it. Just like running a fan without the drying breeze. LOVE this thing. Have one for home and one for travel.

Too Loud and not relaxing
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
It must be a very subjective thing, because the reviews are all over the place. I personally find this to be way to loud, and not at all conducive to sleep or work. If the sound of strong wind makes you nervous, don’t get this. A regular window fan works better for me. I will try an electronic sound screen that has more options for volume and types of sounds.

Not loud enough
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
The product works fine but it’s too quiet, even at the higher level. It might be great for a rural or quiet suburban area, but if you live in an urban area, like we do, it’s not loud enough to drown out outside noise (even with window closed, you can still clearly hear someone talking at normal speaking level 3 stories below).

Marpac sleepmate
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I purchased this item because I live in a small space and sometimes it is nice to block some of the usual household noises when someone needs to nap or sleep later. It does a good job of providing “white noise” that allows me to drift off to sleep and not be awakened by someone else getting up early.

Buy one as a baby gift
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Best item ever for a new baby — at least for the parents. This will put a baby to sleep in short order. This is our second Sound Conditioner in two months because the first one did such a fantastic job. The hospital should offer these with every delivery — gets the baby to sleep & lets Mom & Dad get some much needed sleep. Wish we would have had them when our kids were little — kids that are now receiving these as gifts. Love it!

Great

This unit works great. I only wish I would have bought it years ago. I suppose it could be slightly louder, but it works fantastic as is. Don’t hesitate to buy this unit. We live next to a fairly busy street and it works great masking any road noise.

i didn’t think that anything would be able to help much in our large echo-y office. everything gets amplified. people could very easily hear from the waiting room conversations the doctor was having with patients in his office & from the additional work spaces down the hall you could also hear everything happening at the reception desk. i was surprised how well this little gadget works…loud enough to do the trick! it has a softer setting too that i haven’t tried yet.

We were very pleased to order this white noise machine as a duplicate for the one we have in our home as well, now, at our vacation home for our little grandchildren.
It is terriffic in both places

Great on a cruise ship!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
My husband and I just returned from an 18 day cruise. We used our sound machine every night and slept great. It eliminated any ship noises as well as inconsiderate people talking in the halls after midnight. The machine fit easily in my suitcase and didn’t add a lot of extra weight…which is a consideration while traveling on planes. We now use this machine at home instead of a fan…it is healthier.

Great little gadget…

I bought this unit about 4 months ago to block out the noise of my wife’s cat running around at night. It has worked great from day one.
I like how adjustable this unit is. With the different holes and speeds, you can easily adjust the white noise to your liking. I would imagine this would be great for people living in apartments. Now if it could only tazer the cat when he claws at the door at 5am in the morning.

This device is a great invention, it masks the street noises that disrupt sleep and its own sound is not disturbing at all.

Tiny but amazing!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Much to the chagrin of my husband, I am the kinda gal that can’t sleep without white noise. It used to be a big box fan in our bedroom, but as anyone who sleeps with a fan on knows, that dries you out super quick – doubly so when your house is dry to begin with. Plus there’s the old “stuff a sock under the carry handle to keep the fan from rattling” and heaven help you if it ever gets a rattle that you can’t get rid of!
I love the SleepMate! My husband finally said “No more FAN!” and so I purchased a SleepMate instead. I was dubious at first- I have a very specific kind of white noise that I like to have when I sleep and I was thinking there’s no WAY this tiny thing could ever make a sound to compare to the box fan! However, like other reviewers have said this thing can be LOUD! There’s two speed settings – high and low – and the top and side of the SleepMate rotate, which covers and uncovers holes to change the pitch and tone of the loud “WHRRRRR” sound it makes. It doesn’t matter how picky you are about your white noise, I’ll bet you can find a tone that you like if you fiddle long enough. It has a range somewhere between “quiet strong breeze” and “Warning: low flying aircraft”
The SleepMate is also compact enough to take with me when my husband and I go on trips- something that was always difficult with a fan.
The only, and I do mean ONLY thing negative that I can think to say is that the color is that icky medicinal off-white plastic. If this thing came in a black finish, it’d be perfect!

Rating:5 out of 5 stars
My sister lent me hers when my baby was born and we had family in town, making it so Baby and I had to share a room. Now I own my own and use it in her room every night. It helps her sleep better by drowning out other noises, and it helps me sleep better because I don’t wake up at every tiny sound she makes. And I can still hear her in the room next door when she really does wake up and need me in the middle of the night. I don’t know how anyone lives without one of these! I’m considering another one for myself. Of all the baby purchases we made, this one is right at the top of the list. I highly recommend it!

I work shift work and this white noise maker is great for sleeping during the day. I read some of the negative reviews about the “fan noise” and “not being loud enough”, I have not encounterd either issue. I keep it set on low and it works great for blocking noises like trucks, lawn mowers etc…

Heaven sent Marpac 980 Soundscreen
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
5/24/10-our 30 yr anniv. The Marpac 980 soundscreen is a Godsend. I love my husband so much, but his snoring for the last 10 years has driven me to our spare bedroom more often than not. I always noticed that I slept much better in the summer w/ the window fan. The Marpac 980 is similar to a window fan all yr long. The white noise enables me to sleep in our bed all night-very comfortably! The white noise level is completely adjustable. A wonderful investment and I stongly recommend it.

Well, don’t throw away the box fan but no need to use it as a noise maker anymore. This little unit is perfect for creating white noise to sleep to. My only complaint is the look. Beige plastic, really?

Works on voices but little else…
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
This works great on some background noises and voices. However if you purchased this sound conditioner because you live in an apartment with loud upstairs neighbors forget about it…It does nothing to drown out footfall sounds, furniture moving, running children, etc. The upstairs apartment has wood laminate flooring and I hear EVERYTHING. Even the sound of cupboard doors can be heard in my apartment so I was hoping for something to help me focus my attention on something other than my growing anger because of the loud, unpredictable noises emanating from above. If you are looking to drown out voices this is a great option. If you want to eliminate or at least reduce other annoying apartment sounds this doesn’t cut it.

It is shocking how this little machine does what it does! I live in an apartment building and other people’s noises are always heard in my space, especially at night. Not any more! It really drowns out intrusive noises. I can’t live without it at this point. G-d bless whoever made this machine!

Great Sleep Machine
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
This is a great product. Many white noise / sleep machines are electronic. This machine is mechanical. The sound produced is similar to that of a fan… but without any wind. Great machine. This is my second. It’s great when you are on the road too, it helps my little children still seem like they are at home. That familiar sound is almost like a familiar blanket. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to drown out background noises while they are sleeping.

Small, yet functional
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Good day. I am a huge fan of the SleepMate 980A. For about as long as I can remember (started back in college), I have been using a small fan to make white noise. In college it started out as a device to cover up loud dorm mates so I could sleep or study — and then just kept using one after I graduated. Now 20 (cough) years later, I was still using a fan — but even the smallest fans were bulky and packing one in a suitcase just wasn’t happening.
I came across this little device when I was in a doctor’s office. The office was small with patient rooms very close to the waiting room. Apparently there was a problem with waiting room patients overhearing doctor-patient conversations — so they bought one of these, put it in the waiting room near the patient rooms, and used it to cover up the conversations — and it worked very well. I figured if it could be good for that, why not sleeping.
Until then I had tried digital sound machines — but babbling brooks, crickets, waterfalls, rain, etc. just did’t work for me — and the white noise sounds were awful. I liked the sound of a fan…period.
The SleepMate, for the most part, is a fan — but it has a plastic case all around it. Inside is a motor and fan blad — so it sounds like a fan because it generates sound the same way. I loved it…and was hooked. The 2 speeds are nice, but find speed 1 is all I ever use. You can vary the volume and pitch a bit by rotating the outer cover as well as the top until you find a volume you like. Just twist it with your hand — takes but a second to alter. It has a foam pad on the bototm so it won’t vibrate anything on your nightstand. And here’s the kicker — it’s small enough with an easy to pack shape so I take it with me everywhere and fits nicely in my suitcase.
My wife got used to this as well so I bought a second one for when I travel. I recently purchased two more for my kids. They currently use fans — but will be replaced by these SleepMates in the very near future.
I have been using mine for about 1.5 years and just love the thing. I do think it is a bit pricey for what the unit really is — but it produces a sound just like a fan without the bulk and does not blow any air on you so you don’t have to adjust it away from you like you would a fan.

We have run a fan for several years to make a constant background noise and drown out other ambient noises. We have tried other sound generators but they always had some limitations, not being able to run them continuously, other distracting noise were made, not loud enough. The Sleep-mate 980a is just what we were looking for, it runs continuously, has adjustable volume, and is a constant noise with no aberrations.

No longer skeptical-love it!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I purchased the “white noise machine” based on the recommendation of a co-worker — my husband makes noises that bother me all night. She said this would do the trick; I wasn’t so sure. I gave it to my husband for a birthday gift — figured if it works, it was a good gift because I wouldn’t wake him up during the night to quiet him. We have used the machine for just over two weeks and we both agree that we are now getting a better night sleep than we were before. I have not woken him up during the night since I gave it to him. The directions are right — it does work best when across the room a bit.
I plan to take it when we go out of town too-I want to continue to get a good night sleep.
Don’t be skeptical-get a good night sleep too!!

I have owned many white noise machines and this is one of the best performers. The noise it emits simply “disappears” while masking noise from other apartments and from outside. My only complaint is that the volume could be louder.

We live in an apartment near a train track, and with this little guy running we never hear the train. Our upstairs neighbors used to wake us up at 5am when they got up, but not anymore. It’s a little pricey, but it will drown out almost any noise. Maybe a more aesthetic design would help, but all in all, I would recommend this to any light sleeper.

I had been using fans for many years to block out sounds so I could sleep better. The constant fan noise was always better for me than a CD or the weird jungle sounds and other random sounds that most white noise generators make. This Marpac Sleepmate generates a sound that is much closer to, but not exactly like a fan. The great thing about it is that it isn’t dangerous for kids, it doesn’t take up any floorspace…just a small spot on shelf, and it is much easier to pack than a fan. I have had it for 3 months now and I am sleeping great with it. Overall, I am very happy with the purchase. Enough so that I went and purchased another for my daughter’s room. The only reason it isn’t 5 stars is because it is a slightly different tone and sound than what I was used to and all the adjustments still leave it sounding a bit fake…..but it works.

Wow! After using a friends for a few weeks last year we fell in love with the white noise. Not only does it cover up my husbands snoring but it helps my six year old sleep through thunderstorms (something we’ve had problems with in the past)! I just ordered this white noise machine and I am completely happy with it. We recently installed a reverse osmosis water filtration into our home and it makes a lot of noise in the bedroom where we sleep. I used this for the first time last night and was able to sleep with no problem. I put the setting on low and that was enough to block out all the noise. It sounds like a fan that you use in the summer. Now I don’t have to decide between a good night’s sleep and clean water!!!!

Good, but I Should Have Bought an Air Purifier
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
First, let me say that this little machine works well. It does what it says it will do: It makes a lot of noise. Be aware that it does not make nature sounds; it has only two settings: loud fan and very loud fan. (You can also make adjustments to the noise level by turning the outer casing.)
However, soon after purchasing this item, I bought a Honeywell air purifier, and it sounds almost exactly the same! The difference is that the air purifier actually has a useful function, whereas the SleepMate noise machine only makes noise.
I wish I had known about the air purifier before I made this purchase.
There is one benefit to the SleepMate: It is quite small, and hence good for tight spaces and for travel. It is about 5 inches in diameter as opposed to a 6″x10″ air purifier.

I love this thing and it really helps me sleep. However, it started making this ridiculous metallic clicking noise. I thought about returning it, but then took it apart and fixed it… kind of. I essentially just bent the fan a little in a certain direction and the clicking stopped, don’t ask me why.

This white noise machine was purchased for my toddler’s sleep room to block out other noises. You can adjust the level of white noise from a low level to louder. The lowest setting is sufficient in our case and the noise is actually a soft white noise. I saw one of these sleep machines in a catalog and it said Electromechanical meaning using a motor and fan to reproduce the sound it makes. I soon went online to order one, and glad I did. I have been using air cleaners to reproduce the white fan and motor sound I was after. The filters was costing me a fortune to replace each month. I’m so glade I found this. I only wish I knew about this sooner. I liked it so much, that bought one for my sister who likes the same sound too. She use to go to college dorms and carry a big box fan in the middle of winter to get sound she was after. No more! She loves this thing and it’s easy to take along. I find it’s plenty loud enough, in fact I have it on it’s lowest volume. Would recommend this to anybody that loves the sound of fans and air cleaners to sleep. Great prouduct. Has a long life shaded pole motor that is used in table fans, micrwaves and bathroom fans.

I just moved into an apartment that is near a train track and couldn’t sleep with the noise. This machine isn’t so loud that you can’t hear anything else but it blocks out enough sound to make it comfortable. I’ve only used it on the lowest setting and that seems to work fine.

Works wonders for drowning out noise!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought this product because I have a seven month old who tends to be a light sleeper. This product works wonders. I have a small home and even if I’m in the other room, unloading the dishwasher for example, she’ll wake up. Well not anymore! The sound is a pleasant air whooshing that can be slightly adjusted.
A suggestion, if you’re using this for a baby, let it run for a few hours in another room before putting it in the baby room. It gives off a funny smell when the motor is initially run, but dissipates after a few hours of use.

Great even with Roosters!
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
We first used this noisemaker (actually, a much older model) while staying with a friend. We were so impressed with it, we had to buy our own. It is totally worth the price, and is much more effective than a fan. It’s really just background noise, unlike many irritating sounds made by other noisemakers. Our neighborhood is full of roosters and guinea hens which are quite loud early in the morning, and I’m able to sleep right through it all with this noisemaker.

Doesn’t cover up noises, but makes it easier to ignore them
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
Like many other reviewers I’m one of those highly sensitive folks who is easily distracted (translation: driven to the brink of insanity) by noises that others don’t notice or can’t even hear. I purchased this product for use in an office cubicle environment. It’s no “cone of silence”. It does not eliminate noise or drown it out. I can still hear the noises around me, but they seem more distant and I find myself able to filter them out so that I’m not constantly aware of them. I’m not sure how it works, but my impression is that having the constant and soothing noise nearby gives that sensitive part of my brain something to focus on so that it’s not busy with the other more distracting sounds. It’s not a cure all, but it helps a lot and I think it was well worth the money. Although it’s fairly quiet, my neighbors in the cube farm can hear it, but have said that it doesn’t bother them and they find it slightly calming as well.

Bought this for my husband as a gift, and we both LOVE IT. I cannot express what a difference it has made in having a better night’s sleep for both of us! It blocks out literally all of the noise of neighbors, traffic, and our whimpering dog. It also has a very “even” and constant tone — there is no annoying background “whir” like a fan sometimes has. It also is easily adjustable to a few different volumes, depending on how much you twist open the “holes” on the outside of the machine. It’s not the prettiest thing in the world, but who cares… we haven’t slept this good in years! We’ve even packed it and taken it with us to hotels and it works like a charm. Extremely easy to use – we just pulled it out of the box & plugged it in. I would recommend to anyone who needs to drown out any kind of noise.
